I feel like I haven’t eaten mashed potatoes for a while (this month at least) but was feeling mentally lazy about the effort it would take. I was suddenly reminded of these adverts from when I was a kid for instant mash potato. These adverts are absolutely classic and kinda hilarious.
This brand of instant mash potatoes was launched in the 1960’s by Cadbury. The adverting campaign starting in 1974 featured the Smash Martians who found it amusing to watch humans make mash potatoes in the traditional way, instead of using potato granules like they did. The characters would laugh and use the catch phrase ‘For Mash get Smash’.
I really don’t know if we ever ate this but I remember as clear as day the adverts and my father singing this from time to time and us singing along with him. It’s 2022 and I still don’t think I will be converting to instant mash potatoes anytime soon!
