What things give you energy?

That’s an interesting question… but perhaps it’s easier to start with the things that drain my energy!

Energy Drainers

 The Daily Commute

I complain about my commute constantly and yet, for some reason, I never do anything to change it. It’s pathological. Since 1997, back when I was a medical student, I have subjected myself to minimum 90-minute commutes. Somehow, I have never quite managed to organise my life to live closer to my work or place of study. Currently, I drive 60 miles each way, and it takes about two hours to get to the office. I’m saved by the fact that I can work from home two days a week, however by Friday evening, I’m toast.

Clinic Fatigue

While I love my job, I have found that my brain feels completely fried after a clinic session. There’s just so much information to absorb, process, and share. After four hours in a clinic, my mental battery is usually flashing red.

When I reflect on what I’ve just written, it makes me wonder how I manage to get through the working week. Despite everything, I still manage to “show up.” So what keeps me going?

Energy Sources

People and Connection

The biggest source of my energy comes from my interactions with the people around me.

When I walk through the doors at work, a simple ‘good morning’ from me to the receptionist gives me a  boost of energy. The casual chats I have with colleagues in the staff kitchen, as we prepare for the day ahead uplift me. In joint clinics with the speech and language therapist, I find the discussions energising—talking about the patient, working through diagnostic formulations, and working out how best to support families.

Family and Friends: My Ultimate Recharge

Spending time with family and friends is undoubtably the biggest energy boost for me.

By the time Friday evening rolls around, and I’m driving home after a long week, I’m so tired I could cry. Yet, knowing that I’ll be spending the evening with my mother recharges me. Whether we’re sitting and talking or going out to dinner, it’s always the best way to refresh my spirit.

Time with friends, whether for brunch, lunch, drinks or dinner, can fill me with positive energy and help me feel revitalised after a tough week. And of course, last but by no means least, any time spent with my husband is a guaranteed energy boost. He is my metronome and resets me when I am getting off kilter. I’m not quite sure where I would be without him.

Conclusion: Finding Energy in Relationships

The challenges of work and daily life are draining but  my energy comes from the people in my life. Whether through a simple ‘good morning’  or a deeper connection with  the people I love and cherish, it’s the human interaction that recharges my spirit and keeps me going.
